Andrew and Megan Cottingham

School is back in session and that can only mean one thing for photographers: so are senior sessions. While the weather still isn’t ideal (were talking in the 90’s), the evenings are not quite as suffocating as they were a few weeks ago. More bearable temps in the evening makes these sessions much more doable for this soon-to-be mom. This particular session was a unique one as well as a first for me: twins!

Andrew and Megan are both seniors at LCA, and mom wanted to do their session at the same time so we could get some photos of the two of them together. This worked out perfectly. With multiple outfits and two teens at once, it’s important to find balance and efficiency within the session. The best way to do this was to photograph one while the other went to go change, and the beauty of doing it that way allowed us to utilize every minute taking photos. We did an hour and a half session during golden hour at Adriatica in McKinney. If y’all remember from last school year, that location is quite popular and I get requests for it frequently. I can certainly understand that. Open fields, industrial old towns, and barns are easy to find out here. This location switches it up from the norm, but any location can serve as a challenge to a photographer if you’re willing to change things up no matter where you shoot. One of my favorites of Andrew! He can relax his face without looking angry, and not everyone has that capability! It must be all those times that sports photographers make the men do a “serious” face during team and individual photos…lots of practice for them I guess. I never had Andrew as a student during my teaching years at LCA, but I do know that he is an athlete (football and baseball), and from my more personal interaction with him as a photographer, an all around great kid. He’s a little country (if you can’t tell by the boots), and polite as all get out. He mixed up his outfits with a sports coat to dress it up a  bit, and then finished off the session with a more casual take on the vest – everything paired with jeans and boots.

Unlike Andrew, I did have Megan in my photography class at LCA. While she was a more focused student, which is a great quality, her projects always had a touch of her personality come through. She is kind and easygoing, but it’s apparent that she has a good sense of humor. One of her projects was a double exposure of her cannon-balling into a swimming pool…a stark difference from the others (who also turned in beautiful work!). Megan always tried to think of a unique but fun concept. The photo above is one of my favorites of her. The colors, her eyes and smile, and the way her hair falls, is perfection. What threw me off when I walked up to Megan for their session was her hair. For those that don’t know, she has spirally, curly hair just like Andrew. So it being styled straight with loose curls was totally new to me.

For whatever reason, I assumed that since they are twins they would naturally go to college together…but it turns out they plan to go to completely different schools – one in Texas and the other in Oklahoma. College was one of the best times of my life, and I always look forward to seeing how my seniors do after high school – the accomplishments I’ve seen of former students/clients has been incredible, and I know once these two graduate they will far exceed everyone’s expectations.
